Quarry Bank Mill trip
On Wednesday 17th October year 6 went to Quarry Bank Mill at Style. It is one of the only working cotton mills still in existence that produces cotton- in the country. It took us quite a long time to get there-but the journey was well worth it.
Year 6 toured the mill, learning about how originally families would prepare the cotton for weaving using carding combs, then a spinning loom using man-power. Eventually machines replaced manual labour and people would come to work at Quarry Bank.
They then were transported back in time and went to the actual Apprentice House that is practically untouched since the Victorian period. Here they experienced what a Victorian child would have done on a day-to-day basis, from have school lessons to making beds, working in the mill and what food they would have eaten. The medical room was particularly interesting as they saw live leeches and were told how they used them to suck out infections!
The children have since made information leaflets based on their visit to the mill, they thoroughly enjoyed the day and were fantastic to take out of school.
